Full Review

A reusable container is an excellent tool for the thrifty traveler. You can take home leftovers from a local restaurant, make lunch from the food at the hotel breakfast, and ensure your snacks don’t get crunched if they come in a bag. The Stojo Collapsible Sandwich Box appears to be a fierce contender upon first examination—but we’re curious if the size and weight will slow us down. Let’s find out!

The Rundown

If you’re traveling and like to save money by keeping leftovers, making your own food, and taking lunch from the complimentary breakfast at the hotel, the Stojo Collapsible Sandwich Box is for you.

This upgraded plastic container comes in two pieces. The bottom half is food-safe, BPA-free silicone. We’re used to living a Bisphenol A-free life at this point—but it’s good to be reminded of that sometimes. The silicone is durable and doesn’t have an overtly plastic taste like some cups we’ve tested. This may be because you aren’t putting your mouth directly on the material, but we appreciate it.

The top is BPS-free polypropylene. Who knew that today you could be free of Bisphenol A and S? Both members of the family are problematic and cause health problems, so it’s best to stay away from them. The polypropylene is sturdy and snaps onto the bottom with four clasps. It feels like there’s a ring on the top of the base that’s made from the same material as the top so that the clasps can snap on nicely.

Stojo Collapsible Sandwich Box Full
Stojo Collapsible Sandwich Box | We dig the colorway.

At the time of writing, there are 11 colorways to choose from. Who would have thought—more than you can count on your hands! Well, unless your parents had too much BPA or BPS before birth, you might be able to count these on just your hands!

Jokes aside, the colorways are all very smooth and look like a pastel-cool color wheel.

The top of the box has the Stojo logo imprinted in the polypropylene. This is minimal and hard to notice unless you’ve got your hands on the box, which we dig. Nobody needs to know what brand your lunch is in—and we’re happy the logo agrees.

Stojo Collapsible Sandwich Box Width
Stojo Collapsible Sandwich Box | The bottom of the box.

The bottom of the silicone has a lot more going on. We’ve got the logo again and little icons that tell us what we can and can’t do with it. There’s a little microwave, showcasing that you can put this box in the microwave. Then, we’ve got a snowflake, so you can keep it in the freezer. After that, there’s a dishwasher, so you don’t have to hand wash this thing if you don’t want to.

Moving into the second row, we’ve got an LFGB food-grade certification. LFGB stands for, and we’re not joking, Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch. That’s German for Food and Feed Code—or their version of the FDA. It’s harder to get an LFGB certification than one from the LFGB, so we’re happy to see that.

Next to that, there’s a little icon that says BPA-free. Woohoo! And lastly, there’s a recycle symbol with the number 7 in the middle. This means that it’s grade 7 recyclable. This is a catch-all category for things that can be recycled but don’t fit into the other categories. It can sometimes be hard to recycle these items, but if you live in an urban environment, you should be able to find a place. The top is grade 5 recyclable, which you can typically throw into your curbside recycle bin. To be honest, we hope you won’t want to recycle this thing. It’s sturdy, and it does its job well! Let’s get into that.

Stojo Collapsible Sandwich Box Table
Stojo Collapsible Sandwich Box | The style matches anywhere.

When you pop the top off, the bottom is collapsed. Opening it up is easy; just put a little pressure on the bowl. You may need to push every corner to pop it out. The bottom of the bowl is so wide you don’t have to worry about it tipping over, which we dig. There are small ribs on the edges from where it collapses, but they don’t get in the way. There are measurements on the sides of the interior, which is helpful. One side has milliliters, and the other has cups and ounces. To compress the bowl after washing it, push it down on the top. Or, push each corner in individually. The former is quicker, but the latter doesn’t take as much pressure.

Packability

For a 24 oz box, this thing packs down pretty small. When collapsed, it’s just 1.2 inches (3 cm) tall. It’s the same width and length, but because it’s so skinny, it can fit in many places. You’ll have no issue sliding it into your daypack or travel backpack. You might be a little tight trying to fit it into your sling, but a larger sling or crossbody bag might do the trick.

Because of the hard top, it doesn’t budge or bend. This is both good and bad. Because you can’t manipulate it, you can’t stuff it into a small space. But, because it is so secure, you don’t have to worry about it breaking in your pack. The hard top acts as an exoskeleton for the silicone, so it’s protected.

Quick Comparison

We’re going to compare the Stojo to the Stasher Go Bag. Right off the bat, you’ll notice a similarity—silicone. Whereas the Stojo creates a bowl shape, the Stasher Go Bag model is more of a bag. It has a gusset on the bottom so it can stand, but you wouldn’t want to eat cereal out of one of them,

Another important aspect is weight and size. The Stasher Go Bag containers can be folded into a smaller package. With the Stojo, you can’t make it any smaller than its footprint. It’s flat but pretty large.

When it comes to usage, the Stojo has the upper hand. You can keep any food you can stow in the Stasher Go Bag in the Stojo with more protection. The silicone is thicker, and the top is sturdy. This is helpful if you pack chips or something crunchable inside.

Overall, we’re amped with how the Stojo performed. If you only have a small daypack and are trying to save weight, it might not be the container for you. But if you’ve got the space, want a touch of home, love reheating leftovers, and make your lunch no matter where you are, the Stojo will work well for you.
